SCS

The SCS-007 Jewelry Sustainability Standard - Sustainability Rated Diamonds is a standard developed by SCS that encompasses both mined and lab-grown (synthetic) diamonds. This standard evaluates diamonds based on a comprehensive set of environmental, social, and ethical criteria.

Responsible Mineral Initiative Member

The Responsible Minerals Initiative is one of the most utilized and respected resources for companies addressing issues related to the responsible sourcing of minerals in their supply chains. The initiative offers tools and resources to help companies make informed choices about the minerals they use in their products.

Kimberley Process Certification Scheme

The Alliance for Responsible Mining is a global initiative that sets standards for responsible artisanal and small-scale mining. FSC

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification promotes responsible management of forests and verifies that products are made with materials from sustainably managed forests, using strict social and environmental criteria.

Environment

  • Their audit results indicate use of 96% recycled gold and 97% recycled silver. They produce lab grown diamonds and have also introduced the Renewable Collection, a new collection of lab diamonds grown, cut, and polished with 100% renewable energy from wind and solar.
  • They incentivize small-scale certified miners to use responsible mining practices with low environmental impact, safe and reduced handling of chemicals or chemical-free extraction, and protection of water supplies.
  • Their lab grown diamonds are cut and polished using wind and solar energy or Renewable Energy. The have a Renewable Collection, a new collection of lab diamonds grown, cut, and polished with 100% renewable energy from wind and solar.
  • They use FSC certified, or 100% certified recycled paper in their packaging. They also launched packaging options including “Package My Items Sustainably,” where customers can choose to pack all pieces in one box to reduce packaging materials.
  • They encourage their customers by giving them the opportunity to recycle their gold, platinum and diamond jewellery.
  • To reduce energy consumption, they re-evaluated the design of their new showrooms and reduced energy use. New showrooms were constructed to use 30% less energy.

Maker Wellbeing

  • They only work with suppliers who source from countries and regions with established mining regulations, safe working conditions, and environmental restoration efforts. Their gemstone suppliers must demonstrate traceability in their supply chains and have close relationships with their mining sources.

Animal Welfare

  • They do not use any animal derived ingredients in their products.

Gives Back

  • They started the Brilliant Earth Foundation to further their impact and since then, they have donated $2 million towards improving communities—from the areas where diamonds, gemstones, and precious metals are mined, to the communities where their teams and customers live.
